About Us

Based in Santa Monica, our club draws members from the Greater Los Angeles area including West LA, the South Bay and the Valley. Each year the women and men of Wilderness Fly Fishers pursue their sport from Alaska to Argentina and from New Zealand to Newfoundland. (Often our members are enjoying fly fishing vacations won in either our spring Conservation Super Auction or our holiday Conservation Super Raffle!)

We also do a lot of fly fishing in Southern California, from the surf in nearby Santa Monica Bay to the local pristine trout streams tucked away in the Los Padres and Angeles National Forests. Wilderness Fly Fishers regularly schedules outings to these areas as well as the fabled waters of the Eastern Sierra including the Owens River, Mammoth Lakes, Hot Creek and the East Walker River.

In addition to fly fishing trips, we hold a monthly dinner meeting, featuring highly knowledgeable and respected speakers. Mike Lawson, Tim Rajeff ,Charles Jardine and both Jason and Gary Borger are just a few of the world class anglers who have entertained (and educated) our members in recent years.

We also host classes for both our members and the general public. We offer fly and spey casting clinics, surf fly fishing seminars and fly tying classes (equipment and materials provided). And each year we offer at least one free introductory fly fishing course.

Since our founding in 1965, conservation has always been the main focus of Wilderness Fly Fishers. Indeed, the club’s primary purpose as laid out in our original Mission Statement is: "To enrich our angling experience and provide bountiful opportunities for future generations." It is a commitment we have honored for more than forty years. Today, in addition to beach and stream clean ups and participating in the CalTrans Adopt-A-Highway program, we also donate volunteer time and funds to groups like California Trout, Trout Unlimited, and the Southern California Steelhead Recovery Coalition.

Without doubt, our club’s finest accomplishment is its ongoing Trout In The Classroom program. Through it, we have introduced thousands of local school children to the lifecycle of trout and the ecology of the sparkling streams they inhabit. What could be more appropriate for a family oriented organization like Wilderness Fly Fishers?

Please join us at one of our monthly meetings; you will enjoy the experience. If you wish to join now, you may do so online. Or you may download a  membership application and mail it to us.
